Our power is out and, apparently, is going to be out for several more days so I wrote this the old fashioned way.. and typed it out later at our office.
We had a terrible wind and rain storm yesterday morning, Tuesday, and our power was knocked out.
The temperature last night got down into the 30’s Fahrenheit and it was chilly inside when we woke up. The electric company said our power should be back on by Friday, 11am. Wow. Fascinating experience/opportunity.
Several things jumped immediately to mind. #1. No complaints. I’m so thankful, daily, that I don’t live in Fukushima, Japan. #2. I will be thrilled when I see our next power bill. #3. I love and adore my electronic devices.
I “work” from home so my world is changed dramatically. 24 hours after the power went out and both my laptop and cell phone have lost their charge. Besides, no power means no modem – no internet.
So this morning I pulled out pen and paper to write, the old fashioned way.
First thing every morning, I jump online to see what’s happening. I check with my peeps on Facebook and Twitter and I start writing my blog posts – whatever’s going on in my business world.
Today, I’m a bit off balance. My Mac and my iPhone are sitting on the desk looking forlorn and neglected. Today definitely requires a field trip somewhere, anywhere with functioning power outlets.
How electronically dependent are you? Is your business? It’s interesting, my only discomfort is losing my electronics – not sitting in the dark or no TV.
Thankfully, the temp all week is supposed to be in the 70’s – nice. We have gas fireplaces (warmth), gas hot water heaters (showers) and a gas stove (food). Note to self: never live in an all electric home..
But, no computer, no cell phone, and no internet. I can’t cope. I’ll be going to the office later.
How connected are you? Do you blog? Tweet? Are you on Facebook? Linked-In? If you’re a working professional, you should be. Social media is imperative to keep you informed of what’s going on, to find opportunities to improve your circumstances and to keep others aware of your skills, your products, your services.
In this digital age of amazing cell phones and instant access, we literally carry the whole world in our pockets. The availability of opportunity and experience is limitless.
Don’t ignore what’s available but, instead, research your options, take advantage and be grateful, everyday, for the exchange of information and ideas at your fingertips.
What happens to your business when the power goes out?
